The political calendar heats up

The presidential race may have hit a springtime lull, but the political calendar never really stops.
Beginning Saturday, a series of critical contests will take place across the map over the next six weeks — races that will provide valuable clues about the swing-state political climate and offer insights into the makeup of the next Senate.

Here are five important elections to watch:
Utah GOP state convention (April 21)
Two years ago, Republican Sen. Bob Bennett was denied renomination at his party’s state convention, signaling the arrival of the tea party as a political force and kicking off a season of grief for the national GOP establishment. This time around, it’s Sen. Orrin Hatch who’s in trouble.
The longest-serving politician in Utah history, Hatch is running into resistance in his bid for a seventh term from challengers who contend that his 36 years in the Senate is more than enough.
